NBA Draft Matchmaker: Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks have won the NBA Draft Lottery and will therefore have first pick in the two-day draft event next month.

It's no easy task to play matchmaker for a team that has two All-Star caliber guards, numerous wings, and two players who are both capable of playing centers.

The fact is that there is no obvious candidate for the Hawks if we look at the draft from a positional need perspective.

Therefore, it is all about this delicious, flavorful plus and how this plus harmonizes with the guard duo Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

And look, we could sit here and waste each other's time mentioning five or six guys who are all going to enter the NBA next month with significant potential.

But let's not think about it too much. We have just turned a difficult task into an easy one.

It's Alexandre Sarr, and here's the main reason why.

Unlike the current center duo of Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu, Sarr has the opportunity to get the best out of each of these players and combine them into just one player.

Capela, as we know, doesn't have a reliable jump shot. Okongwu does develop one and is a rock-solid defender, but he's 6'0″ and will always be at a disadvantage.

Sarr offers you the complete package.

He is 7'5″, highly athletic, has good shooting ability, tremendous defensive potential and catches lobs from Young/Murray passes.

While he hasn't yet proven himself in the NBA, his game should – theoretically – mesh with Young in a way that none of the Hawks' big players have. And that alone is a huge advantage for a team that needs to continue to make progress given the quality of players already on the roster.

Sarr will also benefit from playing with two guards who can consistently provide him with high-percentage shots, which should help him get started in his freshman year and perhaps give him some early confidence that could serve as a springboard for his future progress.

Sarr's presence will also entice the Hawks to go out and run, use his long strides as an advantage on quick counters and get early points on the shot clock. The more easy baskets, the better for Atlanta.

For years, the Hawks have lacked a big man who could contribute more. Someone who was more than just a lob threat, more than just a defender, and more than just a complementary player.

Sarr is basically that guy.
