One Love sets a new record with a grand opening day

“Bob Marley: One Love” has set a major new box office record in the United States.

According to Deadline, the biopic scored the biggest opening on a Valentine's Day that didn't fall on a Friday, grossing $14 million in its theatrical debut on Wednesday.

That's more than double Sony's critically panned “Madame Web,” while the superhero film starring Dakota Johnson grossed just $6.05 million.

The critics weren't exactly kind to One Love either. The film received a rating of 43 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience rating, however, is much higher: 94 percent gave it a “fresh” rating.

In “One Love,” Kingsley Ben-Adir plays music icon Marley; the actor even learned to play the guitar for the role.

And although viewers won't hear Ben-Adir's singing voice in every scene of “One Love,” it was still important for him to learn to sing in order to better understand Marley's music.

“I wanted to learn to play and sing because Bob did that,” said the actor Digital Spy.

“I wanted to know what it felt like. In movies you can cheat, pretend and mime, but you can't mime Bob. You can't mimic him, you can't imitate him.
