Sukanen hosts drive-in cinema, car show and model show in one day

Normally there are more than 100 vehicles at the fair.

SUKANEN PIONEER VILLAGE AND MUSEUM – The Sukanen Pioneer Village and Museum offers visitors three events in one day – a model exhibition, a car show and a drive-in cinema.

Kicking off on Saturday, June 1, is the seventh annual model building exhibition, which will showcase hand-built, steam-powered models that function like the real thing.

The scale replicas are mostly made by hand. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the new workshop building.

At 2 p.m. in the afternoon, the annual Show and Shine Spring Fling will feature cars, trucks and motorcycles on display.

The car show was moved to the afternoon to give volunteers breaks between events, said organizer Robby Downton.

The exhibition focuses on vehicles from before the 1980s and offers visitors the opportunity to see all types of vehicles from a period of 60 years and compare the development of design and function.

During the show, all museum buildings are open for viewing and the burger stand and canteen are in operation.

Normally there are more than 100 vehicles at the fair.

The driver and one passenger have free entry, which car owners greatly appreciate.

After the car show ends with the awards ceremony at 6 p.m., Mark Rainey of Bend M Up Metal Works will demonstrate the bead rolling process.

“It’s like stamping metal, just like you would stamp a letterhead,” Downton said.

The beaded metalwork is intended to give visitors “something to do during the break between the car show and the movie night,” he said. Gates for the film will open on the lawn by the elevator at 8:30 p.m., with the show scheduled for 9 p.m.

“You can pay for the car show and the movie as you come in or at the cinema entrance when it opens.”

To watch the film, viewers will need an FM radio or can listen to the sound via a loudspeaker transmission.

“We have plenty of space for cars. We're hoping for about 150 or so.”

“We will have a special concession for the film.”

The fee for the film is $20 for a car with four people and $3 for each additional person.

Visitors can enter the cinema grounds for $5 and are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

The Super Mario Bros. film is the last of the five Mario Bros. films released. “It's the newest of the shows.”

The plot of the cartoon revolves around a brother who searches for his brother to save the world.
