Best Mac for Video Editing (Cheap Options)

When you talk about a Mac made in the last few years, there is no single wrong answer. Since the Mac switched to Apple chips, every With a Mac you can edit videos as usual.

If you edit videos every day for work, you'll obviously want a Mac with more power. But seriously, don't be afraid to buy a basic Mac for your hobbyist YouTube channel.

Even the base MacBook Air, iMac and Mac mini models that get the M-series chips without the adjective can run through Final Cut Pro without a problem. (If you notice any stuttering, you can always go to the video preview and click Show > Quality: Better performance.)

MacBookAir

The MacBook Air is everyone's favorite laptop with all-day battery life and a super-thin design that weighs just 3 pounds. But as the saying goes, don't judge a MacBook by its case.

Even though it doesn't have a fan, it's a surprisingly powerful video editing machine. You'll barely notice it in your bag with your camera gear, and you can create a rough cut of a video before you even get home.

If you can't afford the latest model, at least get the M1 model, which is available at Walmart for $699. Any Intel MacBook Air will struggle with it.

Note, however, that the MacBook Airs M2 and M3 have an additional port on the side because charging can now be done through the MagSafe connector. With an additional port, you have room to connect an additional audio interface, external drive, and more directly to the computer. It's faster, more reliable, and less complicated than connecting a Thunderbolt dock.

Even the basic model with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage should be enough for editing a simple video. It's not the best for exporting an hour-long film with lots of moving graphics, but it's still enough in a pinch.

The larger 15-inch model gives you plenty of space to comfortably edit videos in Final Cut Pro and display the content in pixel-perfect 1080p resolution.

Mac mini

Of the entry-level Mac models, the Mac mini offers the best value for money. It's a modular device that you can combine with your own display, keyboard, mouse, or trackpad.

Unlike the all-in-one iMac and MacBook, you can make various compromises with your own display. You can get a cheaper display without Retina resolution, you can get an ultrawide or curved display, or one with a high refresh rate. Or you can save some money with a cheaper display, like this option from LG, which is my personal choice.

If you save on the peripherals, you can spend more on the Mac. I recommend upgrading to the Pro chip, which will give you more power. This will be useful when exporting your video.

There are also numerous ports on the back for numerous connections.

As a nice bonus, you get two additional Thunderbolt ports.

This configuration also adds additional storage and memory to store more footage on the Mac itself.

Best Mac for Video Editing (Laptop)

MacBook Pro

The best choice is clearly the MacBook Pro with Max chip, which doubles the performance of the Pro chip.

In the age of Apple silicon technology, laptops and desktops offer the same performance with the same specs. The question of which one to buy mainly boils down to whether you can afford to spend a little more on a MacBook rather than the equivalent Mac Studio.

Get a Mac that can do both. By day, it's a video editing powerhouse docked to a desktop screen. And a laptop you can stash in your bag, casually carry into the living room, or watch movies in bed on the sofa at night.

The MacBook Pro has another advantage over desktop offerings: a better display.

Like the Pro Display XDR, it can achieve HDR brightness of up to 1,600 nits – and also comes with a complete computer for a fraction of the price.

It also features ProMotion, which is not available on any external display. This means the frame rate can go up to 120Hz for buttery smooth scrolling. When you play a movie, it can adjust the frame rate of the content so it plays as intended.

The icing on the cake is the built-in SD card slot. You can remove the memory card from your camera and copy the photos and videos while someone else continues shooting.

This computer can do everything.

16-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Max, 36GB Unified Memory, 1TB Storage

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is an incredibly powerful video editing machine. In the Apple Silicon line, the Max chip offers twice the processing power of the Pro chip.

With expanded storage, you can store many more hours of 4K video content directly on the Mac. This simplifies your setup by eliminating the need to lug around a portable SSD and giving you the fastest speeds.

With more memory, editing a huge project in Final Cut Pro becomes lightning fast.

14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro chip, 18 GB unified memory, 512 GB storage

This 14-inch MacBook Pro is a more affordable option. Its smaller chassis makes it easier to carry around, and its lower price means it's easier on the wallet. This Mac is the Goldilocks middle option.

Best Mac for Video Editing (Desktop)

While the MacBook Pro offers the best balance of ease of use and plenty of power for a personal computer, the top configuration of the Mac Studio with Ultra chip offers even more power – unless you absolutely need mobility.

This is because the Ultra chip is not (yet) available on any MacBook.

This makes the Mac Studio the best choice for video production studios large and small. If you always do your computer work at a desk, you might as well spend your money on extra power that you'll appreciate every time you export your video.

We should also at least acknowledge the existence of the Mac Pro. While it doesn't offer any extra speed or power compared to the Mac Studio, one advantage – and really the only reason it exists as a product – is that you can plug in expansion cards if you want to add extra storage or I/O. This comes at a hefty price tag of $5,000 more than the Mac Studio, so it's hard to recommend unless you have very specific use cases.

Best Mac for Video Editing (Final Thoughts)

Twenty years ago, there was only one best Mac for video editing: the Power Mac G4. Fortunately, today you are spoiled for choice.

Any Mac is a powerful video editing machine. The question of what is the best Mac for video editing is basically the same as the question of what is the best Mac.
