Many reviews praised In the Land of Saints and Sinners as being “a cut above” the average Neeson thriller, but others criticized the film's more cliched aspects.

This is what the critics say:

Rich

“A solid, old-fashioned Irish Western about what it means to hang up your gun. It's not particularly deep, but it's nice to see Liam Neeson find some character depth among the usual shooting and whining.”

IndieWire

“In the land of saints and sinners [is] a class above the average Neeson thriller, even if Neeson himself seems more at peace than ever with his role as a contract killer.”

diversity

“The film's essential tension lies in its approximation of Neeson's screen image – here he plays a gentle old man living in a quiet town, but also an unforgettable actor who has made his living shooting criminal henchmen for nearly two decades.”

Screen International

“Neeson is as strong as ever in the role of the 'big boy': he is 71, and all indications are that he will just keep on sinning – as long as there is a child in need.”

The guard

“There are a few entertaining bits here, a few sharp lines and a crazy shootout in the finale, but the overall cliché tone is a bit tiresome, which is also evident in the title, which misrepresents the phrase 'Saints and Scholars.'”

The Hollywood Reporter

“The script is full of cliches and the film lacks suspense despite the many guns, knives and bombs. The best thing that can be said about In the Land of Saints & Sinners is that at least the cast is made up of Irish actors, so the accents are authentic if you can't say that otherwise.”

In the Land of Saints and Sinners is now streaming on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
