Selena Gomez's critically acclaimed new film is coming to Netflix

Selena Gomez's critically acclaimed new film “Emilia Perez” will be released on Netflix after its premiere in Cannes.

The Spanish-language musical crime comedy received an 11-minute standing ovation at the annual film festival last week (May 18), and the streamer is now finalizing a deal for the UK and North America (via Deadline).

Directed by Jacques Audiard, the film revolves around a woman who helps an escaped cartel leader undergo a sex change operation.

In addition to Gomez, Emilia Perez also stars Zoe Saldaña (Guardians of the Galaxy), Édgar Ramírez (Dr. Death) and Karla Sofía Gascón.

“Emilia Perez tells the story of Rita (Saldaña), an overqualified and undervalued lawyer in a large firm who is more concerned with absolving criminals of responsibility than bringing them to justice,” says the film's official synopsis.

“One day, an unexpected escape presents itself to her when cartel boss Manitas (Gascón) hires her to help him exit his business and carry out a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he always wanted to be.”

After its premiere at Cannes, the film received mostly positive reviews, achieving an impressive score of 88% (from 25 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

“A more than risky conceit, but Audiard's steadfast refusal to make a joke of it – this is sincere, sentimental filmmaking – proves thoroughly convincing,” wrote Vanity Fair.

“Emilia Perez is convincing in her unabashed sincerity, and thanks to the committed performances and Audiard's expressive direction, the film takes its mission seriously in all its different genres – musical, crime, and soap opera,” added The Daily Beast.

The Times called Emilia Perez “a musical for our times,” while the Hollywood Reporter praised the film for offering viewers “something fresh, vital and touching, carried by its own quietly floating power.”
