Movies like Furiosa | The Mary Sue

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is finally out! But after you stagger out of the theater, you might be yearning for more post-apocalyptic chaos. Thankfully, the film industry has provided plenty of that!

Here are ten films that are similar FuriousSome are obvious – they are set in deserts or feature street battles – but others have more subtle similarities to George Miller's crazy vision of the future. I've roughly ranked them by how similar they are Furious. Enjoy!

1. All others Mad Max Films (1979–2015)

(Warner Bros.)

I'll get this out of the way first. If you haven't seen it Mad Max: Fury Road but then what do you do with your life? Watch this movie first and then go to the Thunderdome to see the original Mad Max Trilogy.

2. Death Race 2000 (1975)

Sylvester Stallone is driving a convertible wearing a helmet and has a woman next to him.

I am not talking about the Death race Franchise that launched in 2008. Fuck these movies. For the real Death Race experience you have to go back to 1975. Death Race 2000. If possible, watch the movie without knowing anything about the plot (but maybe ask a friend to give you a heads up). I was lucky enough to be able to do that and had to drop my jaw when the race started. So It is worth it.

3. Tank Girl (1995)

Lori Petty as Tank Girl.
(Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios)

The last time I saw Tank Girl was about 25 years ago, so I have no idea how it holds up. Apparently critics hated it, but as a product of the 90s alternative comics scene, I remember it fondly. Lori Petty plays the titular Tank Girl, who drives a tank through a post-apocalyptic desert landscape. Malcolm McDowell is the villain!

4. Water world (1995)

So I will not sit here and say Water world is a good movie. Actually, it's not a good movie. But sometimes you just want to live out your weird and unhealthy post-apocalyptic fantasies in a safe, judgment-free space! Anyway, the polar ice caps have melted, the world is now a water world, and Kevin Costner has gills.

5. Six-string samurai (1998)

A man dressed like Buddy Holly holds a guitar and a sword in a desert.
(Palm pictures)

In Six-string samuraia guy who thinks he's Buddy Holly wanders through the post-apocalyptic wasteland surrounding a radioactive Las Vegas, fighting bad guys with a guitar and a sword. Whatever image you have of this film, it's probably correct.

6. The street (2009)

A father and his son push a shopping cart along a snow-covered street.
(Dimension Films)

In The street, Viggo Mortensen plays a father trying to guide his son to the sea in a post-apocalyptic desert. You've probably noticed that post-apocalyptic deserts are a recurring theme in this list.

7. Snowpiercer (2013)

Tilda Swinton is tied up and surrounded by other characters in Snowpiercer.
(The Weinstein Company)

Who wants a post-apocalyptic desert landscape? Only this time it's ice! Nothing but snow and ice! Thanks to a stupid attempt to stop global warming, the entire human race is now trapped aboard a brutal, fascist train traveling through a landscape too cold to survive. Snowpiercer Rock.

8th. The Book of Eli (2010)

Denzel Washington sits in a run-down attic apartment.
(Warner Bros.)

In The Book of Eli, Denzel Washington plays a lone wolf who roams through a post-apocalyptic desert landscape. But he carries something really important with him! How Water worldthis movie isn't great, but sometimes you just want the mood.

9. 12 monkeys (1995)

Bruce Willis as James Cole and Brad Pitt as Jeffrey Goines in 12 Monkeys
(Universal Images)

12 monkeys is a science fiction masterpiece, and although on the surface it seems very different from Furiousthe two films have some common elements: a brutal future, a repressive oligarchy and a shattered soul just trying to survive. It is So Good.

10. The Northman (2022)

(Focus functions)

Look, I know The Northman is far-fetched, but it appeared on a list of movie recommendations that also included Mad Maxand you know what? I can see it. The Northman is a retelling of the original Hamlet story, set in the Viking Age, and it has all the elements that Furious so great: a tough protagonist bent on revenge, a violent and unforgiving world, and a layer of mythology that gives the plot weight. No, there is no war gear or brainwashed children spraying silver paint into their mouths, but there is Are References to attacking Vikings and Valhalla.
