SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego FC, a Major League Soccer expansion team scheduled to begin play in 2025, announced a five-year partnership with Liga MX club Tijuana for friendlies each season.

The games will be played at Snapdragon Stadium and the teams hope to encourage supporters of both teams to participate in community service projects and other events to “celebrate the spirit of soccer in this region,” said Tom Penn, CEO of San Diego FC.

Penn spoke at a press conference Thursday that was also attended by Club Tijuana president and owner Jorgealberto Hank. The clubs are only about 25 miles apart.

“We've said from the beginning that we want to design this club to represent the entire San Diego region, and it's just a natural fit to enter into a strategic partnership with our neighbors south of the border, Club Tijuana,” said Cody Martinez, vice chairman of San Diego FC and chairman of the Sycuan Tribe.

San Diego FC was named the 30th MLS team last year. The club's owners include Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

Club Tijuana played a game against fellow Liga MX team Club America at Snapdragon last year in front of over 22,000 fans.
