What is the production status? chaos?

Filming for chaos began on July 8, 2021 in Cardiff, Wales. Production lasted for several months before officially wrapping up on October 22, 2021.

Various locations across South Wales were used, such as Barry Island Pleasure Park and Brangwyn Hall in Swansea.

A September 2021 report suggests that Cardiff was transformed into a “snowy American scene” for the film, which is set on Bute Street. Their report said: “Residents and business owners in Bute Street received a letter from Netflix last week about filming which took place over four evenings between September 27th and 30th.”

The feature has been in post-production since October 21, but in an update Gareth Evans explained that there is still some additional filming to be done on the film.

A November 2022 update from the director suggested the film could still hit theaters in 2023, but it could be close. In the post, Gareth Evans explains:

“I've been well aware of my silence on Havoc for some time and just wanted to take the opportunity to update you all on the film's progress after a number of questions have arisen on some of my posts recently.

We're still working on it and doing everything we can to make the film as good as it can be. Some of this includes a small amount of additional photography that we hope to take soon – we're almost there – but “almost there” still means it will still be some time before the film is finished and ready for release.

Sorry, that means there won't be any more teasers/trailers any time soon (not until we secure the entire film and all of its VFX components) – hopefully the film will be completed next summer and the materials will follow sometime in the 3rd. /4. quarter of next year.

We thank you for your patience and apologize again for the delay.

I sincerely hope the film was worth the wait.”

Gareth Evans' next public update came in an interview from Sitges 2023 (which took place in October 2023, although the interview was not published until March 2024), where Evans told Il Cineocchio that the additional filming had not yet taken place, and a comprehensive He provided an update on why the project had become so quiet, saying:

“We are 95% done. We're not there yet. What happens is we are 95% done. We have a really great film. He's really solid. There's still about a week of additional filming to be done on it, which we wanted to finish some time ago. But then the problem came that we shot the film in the middle of the pandemic. And then when the pandemic was over, this whole thing happened because so many in the industry shut down for six months that it almost became like a goldmine with everyone making movies all the time. And then, you know, you get this big ensemble together for your project. And then suddenly you're done. They go away and do other projects, right? And some people are here, some people are there. Getting them all back together for the same week was really difficult. And just as we were about to find a suitable date and also plan the creative process for the additional recordings, suddenly the scriptwriters and then the actors went on strike. So we had to retreat. And of course we expressed our solidarity with the scriptwriters and the actors. So we're basically in standby mode, waiting.

And then I know that the writers' strike is over now, but the actors are still waiting. In solidarity with them, we wait. And as soon as we get the green light and can start working again, we will start working again. I guess we'll probably need another movie. I don't think we'll come out until another film, maybe another year at the earliest, because we have a production week to shoot. Then we have to edit it. Then we have to do VFX work on it. Then we need to do the color correction and then the sound mixing. So all of these things need to be done. And then it has to be packaged and it has to be ready and it has to be promoted and then it gets published. So all of these things take a month, maybe longer.”

Scooper and journalist Jeff Sneider was a guest on The Hot Mic podcast in December 2023 and reported on the production. When asked if the project had been filming for two years, Sneider replied, “Havoc has been on my list of films I'm most excited about for about two years,” and said at the time that the film would be released in 2024. He also mentions a rumor that haircuts cause delays: “They had to do pretty extensive reshoots, but everyone came back with a different haircut,” which resulted in significant visual effects costs.

According to UK Casting News, the aforementioned additional filming is still pending, with the strikes set to take place in Wales in May 2024.

When will chaos be released on Netflix?

Since filming ended in October 2021, many would be forgiven for thinking chaos was supposed to be released on Netflix in 2022. However, given the extensive post-production phase, additional filming, strikes, and more, we are still in 2024, with no release date or window!

Netflix has notably left the title behind since its release of “Next on Netflix” in February 2024, when it announced that over 50 new films and documentaries would be released throughout the year.

Ed Talfan's profile on Severn Screen still says the film will be released in 2024, and just recently World of Reel reported that according to their information, the film is expected to be released in late 2024 and could be shown at TIFF (that's in September).

More than just confirmation for us chaos is still coming to Netflix, Netflix could not provide any further information.
