Trend Micro protects consumers in the age of AI PC

A number of solutions and initiatives are expected to be released during 2024

SINGAPORE, May 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global leader in cybersecurity, today unveiled its plans to protect consumers as they increasingly adopt generative AI applications, while AI PC usage increases. Designed to address the unique opportunities and risks of AI, Trend's strategy helps consumers safely use generative AI applications to reduce their risk of being harmed by the use and misuse of AI. In addition, Trend Micro has and will continue to innovate in using AI in its own cybersecurity solutions and services to make security more effective and efficient.

While AI offers great promises to consumers, it also presents cybercriminals with the opportunity to more effectively commit fraud and scams in the form of tactics such as harder-to-detect phishing emails or deepfake videos. In a recent study by Trend, nearly 72% of respondents expressed excitement about AI's potential to improve the quality of tasks and discover new opportunities, but nearly 65% said they were concerned about AI's role in spreading misinformation, while 58% were concerned about AI misusing their images and likenesses. Beyond this potential misuse of AI, there are other potential vulnerabilities of the AI applications themselves that, without protection, could lead to consumers being unknowingly misled or inadvertently exposing their private data.

Eva ChenCo-founder and CEO at Trend: “Generative AI represents an infrastructure shift that requires us to leverage our long-standing understanding of digital threats to develop innovative solutions to meet the current situation. Our goal is to ensure that every user, from individual consumers to the largest organizations in the world, can leverage the full potential of AI and AI PCs safely and reliably.”

The introduction of AI PCs also represents another shift in the way consumers will use AI applications in the future, thanks to the neural processing units (NPUs) that power them. IDC predicts that AI PCs will account for nearly 60% of all PCs shipped worldwide by 2027, growing from 50 million units in 2024 to over 167 million in 2027. With an AI PC, consumers can now run AI applications locally on their devices, which promises better speed and more privacy than if they had to access data or send it to the cloud for processing. This additional computing power also gives Trend the opportunity to deploy some of its cloud AI capabilities on devices and introduce new features that take advantage of the efficiency and privacy benefits that AI PCs offer.

Trend Micro will deliver consumer solutions in the second half of 2024 designed to secure AI, protect users from AI abuse, and leverage AI in both existing and new products and services, including:

  • Protecting AI applications: Protection features against tampering with AI applications, contaminating the AI application with malicious inputs, and preventing AI applications from accidentally or maliciously accessing confidential data.
  • Protection against malicious AI content: Solutions that protect consumers from malicious AI-generated or AI-altered content.
  • NPU-powered cybersecurity features: Solutions developed for AI PCs that utilize the additional computing power.

As a sign of the importance of AI threats, MITRE has launched its ATLAS matrix, which assesses the risks associated with AI assets. The MITRE Adversarial Threat Landscape for Artificial-Intelligence Systems Trend maps its capabilities to this matrix where applicable to consumer use cases.
