Why Draymond Green thinks a LeBron James union is unlikely before the end of his NBA career – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

It seems unlikely at this point that Draymond Green will work together on the court with NBA superstar and close friend LeBron James.

The Warriors forward appeared on the “Point Game” podcast alongside former NBA guard John Wall and co-host CJ Toledano, where he was asked about the possibility of playing with James before either player retires.

“As I said, unless Bron [is] “I don’t think that’s going to happen when I come to Golden State,” Green said. “For me personally, if the Warriors keep me until I'm done and my shoes are worn out and I'm throwing stuff to them over the phone line, then I'll stay there.

“When I look around the NBA, there's nothing that excites me more than doing everything I can to try to win another championship with the team I won four championships with, with the Guys I won four championships with Steph [Curry] and Klay [Thompson]; I never look around the league and think, “Hmm, I think I'm going to be great.” [over there].' Damn, I can be great here. I can do what I need to do to win another championship and that’s my focus.”

There has been speculation over the years that Green, either as a free agent or as part of a potential transfer, wants to leave the Warriors and team up with James at some point. However, unless James joins the Warriors, Green isn't going anywhere and will still want to finish his career with Golden State.

“As much as I would love the opportunity to play with Bron one day, I thought I would get a chance with Team USA this summer,” Green said. “That didn’t happen to me and I think that’s probably the end of the possibilities because as long as this franchise has me, I’ll be there.”

The only scenario Green envisions playing with James was a reality the Warriors hoped to make happen before this season's Feb. 8 trade deadline. Golden State attempted a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers for James the night before the deadline, and while they tried several approaches to land the 20-time NBA All-Star, their efforts were unsuccessful.

And if James doesn't exercise his player option worth $54.1 million for the 2024-25 season this summer, he could test free agency. If so, could the Warriors try to sign him?
