The Detroit City Football Club's new stadium will be a loss for Hamtramck

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – The Detroit City Football Club’s plans to build a new stadium within the city limits are causing a lot of excitement.

Both the creation of a more modern venue and the development of a long-disreputed property are seen as “wins”. But there is also a sense of loss – for the city of Hamtramck and the stadium that played such a large part in the club's success.

Detroit City FC has played at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck since 2016. A little less than 8,000 people live there and grab a bite to eat or do some shopping in the area, but that will change by the 2027 season.

DCFC fans showed up for the team in large numbers, and playing games at Keyworth Stadium was an economic boost for Hamtramck.

“We have enjoyed the partnership with them and it will be a loss for the community,” said Mayor Amer Ghalib.

Ghalib is one of many people saddened by DCFC's departure. He attended several games himself, but the club is ready to move on. It is building its own stadium in Corktown, on the site of the old Southwest Detroit Hospital. Although renderings of the new stadium are not yet available, everyone involved in the project is excited about what is to come.

Alex Wright, co-owner and chief creative officer of DFCD, said the move will put the team on stronger financial footing while acknowledging everything Hamtramck has done for them.

“The city and people of Hamtramck were there when we needed them,” Wright said. “The investment from our club and our fans is a testament to our gratitude and we look forward to taking on the challenge of making our forever home as iconic a landmark.”

Ghalib said there are no hard feelings, just growth.

“We have about two years left to work with them,” Ghalib said. “They are always welcome in Hamtramck.”

The Detroit site has been purchased, but final financing for construction is still being worked out.
