Is “Dumb & Dumber Returns” real or fake? Speculation about new films explained

A recently released marketing piece for a sequel to Dumb & Dumber (titled Stupid stupid Returns) has sparked speculation among fans as to whether the film is real or fake.

Are Dumb & Dumber Returns real or fake?

A new trailer is going viral on YouTube announcing the release of a third Dumb & Dumber film titled Dumb & Dumber Dumb and dumber returns.

The trailer makes it clear how Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) sends Harry Dunne, played by Jeff Daniels, the news that he is dying of lung disease, preparing the two for a third wild adventure together.

Dumb and dumber returns would see the two reunite to find a cure for Lloyd, engaging in similar shenanigans that fans have seen since their first appearance in 1994.

Unfortunately, it's easy to see that this trailer is fake, as is the premise of the film itself.

The footage is from Jim Carrey's previous films as well as the previous two Stupid stupid films, and fans can see that much of the dialogue doesn't match what Carrey or Daniels is saying with their mouths.

The trailer also comes from a YouTube channel that is known for creating fake trailers like this one.

Will Dumb and Dumber 3 happen?

The Stupid stupid The franchise faced more than its fair share of challenges, with Daniels even noting that his agents didn't want him to direct the original film at all.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in May, Daniels admitted that his biggest motivation for making the first film was his desire to do a comedy and work with Jim Carrey:

“I had agents who were right and told me, 'You're a serious actor. This is not the direction you need to go. We're going to put a stop to this and get you out of this movie.' But I wanted to change things up with a comedy and work with Jim Carrey.”

Even he was nervous, remembering telling Carrey it would be like this before the infamous toilet scene in the first film “Either the beginning of [his] Career or the end of it. In this scene, his character was struggling with extreme digestive issues after drinking tea laced with a laxative:

“It's one thing to read the toilet scene, but then the day comes and we actually do the toilet scene. I said to Jim, 'This is either the beginning or the end of my career.' Jim, who is fearless, told me, 'It's going to be great.'”

In early 2024, while promoting his work on Amazon Prime Video American Rust: Broken JusticeDaniels told the New York Post that he had not heard of a third film.

He even joked in the interview that People did “I have to stay away from the internet” in response to the rumor that Dumb and Dumber 3 happened. This rumor originally came from Giant Freakin' Robot, a website known for regularly spreading such movie release rumors.

Daniels even noted that he still talks to Jim Carrey occasionally, and he has “I have no idea where he is.” This makes it clear that a third film would not be made without Carrey's approval.

“I’m talking to Jim [Carrey] occasionally. We are still good friends. I have no idea where he is. None of this happens if Jim doesn't want it to happen.

Carrey may end up quitting his acting career after teasing during the promotional tour Sonic the Hedgehog 2 That retirement may have been on the table for him. Meanwhile, his return as Dr. Robotnik confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 3will be released in December, but at the time of writing, no further appearances are officially scheduled.

All things considered, Dumb and dumber returns (or any kind of Stupid stupid threequel) doesn't seem to be out of the question, although fans will certainly keep their ears open for further official reports.
