Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees to slaughter Agent Smith in MultiVersus

MultiVersus Could Be a Killer Time (Warner Bros. Games)

Jason Voorhees and Agent Smith from The Matrix have been added to MultiVersus, in one of the strangest line-ups in gaming history.

If you thought the combination of Arya Stark, Bugs Bunny, and LeBron James in MultiVersus was already strange, Warner Bros. has taken its peculiar fighter lineup to a new extreme.

Released in beta in July 2022, MultiVersus is essentially a clone of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series, albeit with Warner Bros. characters such as Batman, Superman, Bugs Bunny and Steven Universe. After almost a year, the beta was discontinued in June 2023, with the full launch now scheduled for May 28th.

Ahead of the platform fighter's return, developer Player First Games has released a trailer to introduce the revamped roster – with some unexpected faces.

The strangest new addition is fictional serial killer Jason Voorhees, best known for slaughtering teenagers in the Friday the 13th films. He's been given a cuddlier aesthetic in keeping with the general MultiVersus tone, but it's still strange to see a masked killer next to Marvin the Martian.

The other new character is Agent Smith from The Matrix, who will be added to the roster upon release. These two join previously announced new characters The Joker and Banana Guard from Adventure Time, which will be available at launch.

They all join the original roster that includes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny, Taz, Marvin the Martian, Finn and Jake from Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, Velma and Shaggy from Scooby Doo, Harley Quinn, Tom & Jerry, Arya Stark from Game Of Thrones, The Iron Giant, Black Adam, Gizmo and Stripe from Gremlins, LeBron James from Space Jam, Steven Universe and Garnet from Steven Universe as well as the original character Reindog.

Following the trailer, some fans have already seen hints of possible upcoming characters. As the WB Tower is breached, Samurai Jack's sword, Aquaman's trident, a Powerpuff Girls toy, and what looks like a broom (which could have something to do with either Harry Potter or Wicked) fall out of a shower of confetti.

The trailer itself, which is quite impressive in its details, also contains other background references to other Warner Bros. films. As summarized in a thread on Reddit, these range from DC's Raven and Robin, Dexter's glasses from Dexter's Laboratory, Green Lantern, Marceline's guitar from Adventure Time, Scooby Doo's Scooby Snacks, Daffy Duck and the Animaniacs.

While it's likely that some of these are just playful references, it's safe to assume that others were placed as references to DLC characters. The Powerpuff Girls, for example, were already hinted at in an earlier trailer for The Joker.

However, there is still no sign of A Clockwork Orange, which, incredibly, appeared in Space Jam 2, which featured a similar mix of corporate IP.

Along with new characters, MultiVersus will run on Unreal Engine 5 when it returns later this month. It will also include a new PvE mode and overhauled combat mechanics.

The biggest question is whether the free-to-play fighter will retain its popularity this time around. The MultiVersus beta was hugely popular when it first launched, but six months later the numbers on Steam dropped by 99%.
