Fort Worth Police Officer Injured in Shooting Through Glass – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A Fort Worth police officer was injured by broken glass during a shootout with a man suspected of being involved in an earlier shooting.

“We had a cowardly attempt to take out one of my officers this evening,” said Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes.

Fort Worth Police were notified of a possible suspicious vehicle in connection with a shooting near the 4800 block of Miller Avenue on Saturday, May 18th.

The officer recognized the vehicle based on the description and turned on the emergency lights, prompting the driver to stop and exit the vehicle, Fort Worth police said.

As the officer exited his vehicle, the driver grabbed a gun and fired several shots at the officer. According to initial investigations, the driver got into his vehicle and fled when the officer returned fire.

The officer believed he had been shot, but it later emerged that he had sustained injuries from flying debris. He was taken to a local hospital and released Sunday evening, police said in a news release Sunday.

As the driver fled, the officer followed him for a mile before the patrol vehicle was disabled by gunfire, Chief Noakes said.

“Even though he believed he had been shot, he continued to pursue this individual,” Chief Noakes said. “These are the people in the Fort Worth Police Department who go out and serve every day and every night.”

Fort Worth police said the driver was taken into custody and received medical treatment.

This investigation is being conducted by the Fort Worth Police Department and is ongoing.
